Hi, I am new to this forum and was wondering if anyone has problems with their blood pressure being elevated. I have a high heart rate lots of times, but I also keep swinging back and forth from real low blood pressure (75/53) to high (170/90). One time I woke out of a sound sleep with my heart pounding out of my chest and had to call the paramedics. When they came to my house, my BP was 225/110. They were afraid I was going to have a stroke and started giving me oxygen and after some deep breathing it started coming down. A lot of times I think I am the cause of my BP rising as a result of my "what if" thoughts. Also, every time I go to a doctor now my BP is elevated and I think I have "white coat syndrome" as I can take my BP before and after the visit and it is normal or low. It's just that I have seen so many doctors (from cariologists to nutritionists in the past ten years and I can't stand going to them anymore as they aren't helping me). I was finally diagnosed with MVP six years ago after my third echocardiogram. I was 50 when I started having symptoms and 54 when I was diagnosed. However, when I look back I think I had this in my younger years and didn't know it as I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia when I was 18 and the first time a doctor said I had a heart murmur was when I was 23 years old. My mother had the same condition, I believe. She passed away before being diagnosed but I am following in her footsteps with the same problems. Also, I have a sister who has a heart murmur and two brothers who have heart murmurs and my daughter was diagnosed three years ago with MVP. So it is pretty safe to assume it is hereditary in my family. So I am just wondering if fluctuating blood pressure is a symptom others are having. I know the fast heart rate is and I have that on a regular basis too. I have been on Toprol XL - 25 mg. for the past four years and it helped me at first with the panic attacks and BP and the doctor told me to increase it to 50 mg. daily now. But when I do that my BP is so low in the a.m. I can barely get out of bed and get ready for work. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Judie

Hey Judie, I've had my heart wake me up out of a sound sleep on many occasions. Also, my BP is usually on the low side but will swing upwards at times. I came off of hormone replacements a couple months ago and my BP has dropped even lower. I get a little wavy at times but it's not too bad. I don't have a problem with a racing or accelerated heart rate but the pounding drives me over the edge sometimes. It can go one for days. Hang in there, you are not alone.Linda

Back in March when I first started having symptoms, my blood pressure went up. I wish I could remember the numbers...I want to say 135/70, but I'm not positive that's correct. My doctor wasn't concerned and did not consider me to be someone with "high blood pressure" as stress and anxiety causes one's blood pressure to fluctuate and at the time was incredibly nervous. In fact, at one appt. my Doctor's assistant took my blood pressure and it was high, I asked my Doctor why and he took it again and it was normal. Go figure. I went back again in June for a regular physical and my blood pressure was normal then too.I, also, get all the palpatations and increased heart rate.

Thanks for replying. Today I am feeling much better. I had a really bad bout this week of chest pain off and on and it has finally subsided. I go through this about twice a year for 6-9 days at a time and then it just goes away. (Thank God). It is so difficult to know what to do as I also have GERD so when I get chest pain I have to distinguish between the MVP pain and the reflux pain. I'm always told if I was having a heart attack I would know, but women sometimes don't have the same symptoms as men so it is really scary when the chest pain lasts for a long time. Hope you both have a great day today too!Judie

Maybe be you have transient high blood pressure which means it goes up only when you are very nervous. You should invest in a blood pressure machine that you can monitor your blood pressure. If it's transient that would make cents why you are having a problem with the medication. Maybe you can talk to your MD about taking it as needed if all else is OK

I have a BP machine that I use at home and I record it when I am not feeling well, like today. It was below normal all day today (I took it at four different times). I have had a lot of chest pain again tonite and it is finally subsiding enough for me to be able to go to sleep. I hope I have a restful night as I haven't been getting very much sleep. I think that too is part of my problem. Thanks for all the replies. It sure is reassuring to know that I am not in this alone. Wouldn't it be wonderful if a cure was found so we wouldn't have to live day to day worrying about this, but could look forward to a future event? I am going to Hawaii for two weeks Oct 14th so am really hoping this bout is over with by then.

Hi Judie, I was diagnosed with high BP in July of this year and put on a diuretic. I didn't feel that the doc was right so I purchased a BP machine and it is fine. It spikes when I go to the doctor or get nervous. I take my beta blocker (Rhythmol) only on an as needed basis. I've been doing really well lately. Keeping calm, not worrying is a big help. I do yoga, painting classes and want to get back to meditation, not working is a big relief, eventhough I liked my job. Take care.------------------

Dear Jawille I normally have low BP. But after both my pregnancies and on other occasions of stress, my Blood Pressure has peaked on on and off for a while. It would peak for about 2 hours or so, and I would sometimes feel dizzy and lightheaded. Then it would go back down to normal (which is low for me... 100/70). Usually this happened when I was very tired and/or feeling anxious or stressed. My peaks were usually 150-160 over 105-110. However, I found the more I worried about it, the worse it got... and anxiety definitely plays a role in it. When I went to my Dr's Office, same thing.. but I switched Dr's to a new one that I fel more comfortable with, and this helped tremendously. For me, lieing down did not help at all, but drinking more fluids and trying to rest in a recliner helped. I even self medicated a little bit and took a sleeping pill at night. That helped too, as I was having trouble sleeping. I would wake up with pounding heart and high BP and sit and worry about it all night. I hope that you get to the bottom of this soon and that you start feeling better. We are all here to help and to listen at any time. Take Care Caroline
