Hi everyone,

It seems I have an allergy to my cat! I sneeze my head off every morning.

I bathe my cat with wipe-its from the pet store designed to reduce the allergens but although she loves it there is no help from this.

I am taking anti-histimines that are supposedly safe for MVP, but here again, little help.

Air cleaning machine on all day.

Any suggestions?

****Kerrie

Are you sure it is the cat you are allergic to? I would go to the doctor for an allergy test just to be certain. It could be something else! Here are some suggestions in the meantime (some you are already doing):

- air cleaner/purifier - HEPA filters are best, and also ensure that the machine is big enough for your room.
- frequent vacuuming (again, if you can, invest in a vacuum with HEPA technology)
- frequent grooming of your cat.
- ask your vet about fatty acid supplements (like Omega-3) for your cat - these can help keep her skin and coat in top condition and help her shed less.

Hope that helped!

Thanks so much for your advice.

I will get allergy testing. Perhaps I am allergic to more than cat.

I groom her quite frequently, too.

The vacuuming I could work on.

The diet additive---I will discuss this with the vest soon.

THANKS

I found some interesting, and useful, cat allergy information here:

http://www.messybeast.com/allergy.htm

From the site:

"THE ALLERGY-FREE EGYPTIAN HAIRLESS CAT"

There is no such breed. This cat was an invention of the TV series "Friends". Unfortunately, it has led many people - and even some doctors and veterinarians - to recommend this breed as a pet for cat-allergy sufferers. Many people have wasted uncountable hours trying to find an Egyptian Hairless Cat before they discover these don't exist. It was irresponsible of the TV series writers to mislead people and perpetuate the myth that hairless cats don't cause allergies. They have caused many people to waste a lot of time.

some say that Siamese cats are non-allergenic, one could check that out. However, I am not sure that it helps you Kerrie, since you might not be planning on swapping your cat for another non-allergenic one? Grooming would make the allergy much, much worse. Sometimes you might be allergic just to the saliva. Good luck on finding a solution.

The allergy-free hairless cat!! LOL!!!

Allergies aren't even caused by the hair. It's the dander - microscopic flakes of SKIN. It is important to groom though because dander will also be deposited when the cat sheds.

Cats also have secretions in their saliva, and even in their claws, that most people are allergic to. If you have ever been bitten or scratched by a cat, you may notice that the skin immediately surounding the wound will puff up. It's an allergic reaction.

Sorry Naurika, I completely missed your post! Yes, actually grooming may make the allergy worse because you would be fluffing the stuff into the air as you brushed. Didn't really think of it that way. Kerry, if your cat is a shorthair I wouldn't even bother. The fatty acid supps will help with shedding, and vaccuuming will help control what DOES shed.

Hi: I have had cats since i was 12, years old. I found i was allergic, at 15, and took the allergy shots, for two yrs, and then they triggered asthmatic trouble. The allergies went away somewhat, and weren't as extreme, in my later yrs.But this pas tyear a friend got me a6 week old kitten, i could not resist, he was precious, however, it triggered, my allergies agaIN and this time thw weezing etc, turned into full blown asthma, however apt living couldn't have helped either, as i was used to living in abigger place. The thing most allergy sufferes are allergic to is the cat DANDER , not just the hair.I wa stold that by all my allergists.I vacuuum every other day, and keep him grommed. But i do not do the brushing. Take care, Yes..... and also , my cat is somewhat aggressive,a dn the cat bite can trigger attacks too. Jackie

I just have 'seasonal' (but now every season) alleries...and they are worst when I first wake up in the morning. I started taking allergy medicine before I go to bed at night, and that seems to help a little in the morning. I just keep lots of tissues handy in the morning!
